Does Medicare Cover Eye Tests?

In Australia, Medicare can cover eye tests done by a qualified optometrist. This is done through a process of bulk-billing, meaning the optometrist charges the cost of the exam directly to the Medicare system rather than the patient, resulting in no out-of-pocket expense for the customer. To access these benefits, you must be an eligible Medicare cardholder.

At Options Optometrists, our standard comprehensive eye tests are bulk billed to Medicare. Some scans and procedures outside a standard eye exam are not covered by Medicare, but if these scans or tests are indicated for you, your optometrist will discuss this with you before you commit.

How Many Eye Tests Does Medicare Cover?

Options Optometrists bulk bill all standard eye tests at any time you have concerns or feel your vision has changed.

Children’s eye tests are also bulk billed. However, if your child’s vision needs more specialised scanning or testing, any costs outside of Medicare would be discussed with you first.

What’s Not Covered by Medicare

All standard comprehensive eye tests are bulk billed by Options. However, some specialised scans and tests may be charged outside Medicare. Procedures such as foreign body removal and red eye treatment may also have extra costs. However, if additional scans or procedures are suggested and fall outside of Medicare coverage, your optometrist will discuss any extra costs with you before or during your appointment.

Medicare does not cover the purchase of glasses or contact lenses. However, if you have private health insurance, your policy might cover some of these expenses. Whether you receive optical benefits depends on the specific level of coverage you have selected with your provider.

If you are diagnosed with an eye disease or disorder, your optometrist may refer you to an ophthalmologist. These are specialists trained to perform eye surgery. Medicare might provide coverage for some eye surgeries, but it depends on the type of surgery it is. To avoid unexpected out-of-pocket expenses, it is a good idea to ask about an ophthalmologist’s fee and whether they offer bulk billing before you attend your appointment.
